Crypto, DeFi, and blockchain can be confusing. As someone that has been buying and holding domains for over 15 years. I continue to build websites and pay the bill for them every year. I was super excited when I first heard about Unstoppable Domains which does not have a renewal fee. I’m constantly coming up with ideas, and the promise of owning my domain forever sounded terrific! But I ran into my first problem almost instantly when I was unsure which wallet I needed and how to set it up.
Below is a list of all of the wallets known to work with Unstoppable Domains, and I will link to setup guides or videos as I make or find them.
To kick things off and keep it simple, I will list my #1 and #2 picks for supported wallets (along with a wallet to support .Zil domain). At the bottom of the page, you can find the complete list of supported wallets by category.
Supports Layer 2 Minting
If you are new to NFT blockchain-based domains, you will likely want the most straightforward and least expensive process possible. Minting on Layer 2 is FREE. However, you do lose out on some compatibility as different wallets work to support the Layer 2 polygon solution.
Scroll down to find out more about each option.
#1 MetaMask – Exclusive to the Ethereum ecosystem, MetaMask supports Eth and any tokens built on top of Ethereum. This can feel a little complicated to a newbie, but I will make some guides and link them here once completed so you can move forward with confidence.
#2 Coinbase Wallet – Easy to use and supporting a wide range of cryptos, you do not need a Coinbase account to get started with the Coinbase wallet. I would list Coinbase as my #1 choice, but I found it easier to find resources using MetaMask. Once I make my full Coinbase Wallet tutorial, I will link it here.
Honorable Mention – Trust Wallet (Android only). See below.
Supports Layer 1 Minting
The original way to mint domains with Unstoppable Domains was right on the Ethereum blockchain, and you can still do this; however, you can expect to pay some very high gas prices to make this happen. The trade-off right now is you get full compatibility for hosting IPFS websites and doing a few other things, but again you are paying the full gas price to do any of the things you might want to do.
#1 MetaMask – See above.
#2 Trust Wallet – Much like the Coinbase Wallet, Trust Wallet supports many coins and has a ton of versatility. It didn’t make #1 here for two reasons. First, it is via app only. Second, I have limited experience using Trust Wallet because it only supports Layer 2 on the Android version. However, it beats out Coinbase for the #2 position as the first wallet to work with all 10 domain extensions.
Honorable Mention – Coinbase Wallet. See above.
Zil (articles exclusively covering .Zil coming soon!)
Zillet – Zilliqa is the world’s first sharding-based blockchain. I’m still researching this, but I believe that means one would not have to store the entire blockchain on a node.
What Is Minting and Why Does My Wallet Choice Matter?
When you purchase your domain on Unstoppable Domains, you only have it in your Unstoppable Domains account waiting for you to “claim” it or “mint” it. Minting is the process of fully registering your domain to the blockchain and gaining full custody of your new domain.
Once minted, you must know that the support Unstoppable Domains can offer is very limited and likely non-existent when it comes to recovery because your wallet is owned and controlled by you alone. It is vital that you not lose access to the wallet you mint. You could lose your domain or access to the domain forever. Your only hope is to recover access to your wallet, and NOBODY can help with that.
This is the first reason wallet choice matters. You want a wallet that will be easy for you to work with. Many wallets provide pneumonic keys or passwords to protect your private keys. I also think it is crucial to find a wallet you like working with so that you will use it enough to be familiar with it and not make a mistake.
Last, it is imperative that you are diligent and not fall for any scams. Some wallets have gotten hacked in the past, and there are ways to help minimize the risk. Such as having your wallet on a separate computer not used for typical daily browsing.
Your level of risk and ability to manage the risk is entirely up to you and will determine how successful you are in crypto. So you need to ask how important the name you are minting is to you.
For instance, let’s say you bought your family name, and you want to keep it as an available IPFS website that gives people a permanent record of who they are and their history. You might want to store a full copy of the pneumonic recovery phrase in a safe place that you control and then give trusted members of your family a word and number from the phrase so that no single person has access. The only way for your family to access it if your copy is lost or you pass away is if they call come together.
The previously mentioned scenario might be an interesting way to enforce a will.
Should I use Layer 2 or Layer 1?
Before we get started, there are a few things you need to decide. Keep reading, and I will guide you through the choices, and then you can select what you need.
Unstoppable Domains is working diligently on getting applications and wallets to support the Layer 2 solution. However, not all of them are there yet. In my mind, they will get this done, but you may want to consider that you might have to wait a time before you can do some things with the Layer 2 minted domains.
Watch my Layer 2 Minting video above.
If you must have access to IPFS websites and other features of Unstoppable Domains or find an application you want to use that only supports Layer 1, then your choice is pretty cut and dry. Unstoppable Domains is working on allowing a back and forth migration between Layer 1 and Layer 2.
Once that is finished, the choice will be straightforward.
I will update this article with more information as it becomes available, including when I make guides for each of these things.
